Weather in December in Moscow.
Moscow climate combines the features of European moderate and Asian strong continental climates. Winter in Moscow starts in late October and continues till end March. Normally, a stable snow blanket covers the surface by December, however the last year was an exception.
Average temperature in December is -6.1°C. On average, there are only about 8 days, when temperature may fall down to -25°C in winter. The absolute minimum was registered in 1978 at -38°C, whereas the record +9.2°C were registered just a year ago!
Last December was the warmest in the history of the city.
Day temperature exceeded the record readings on many occasions. The average December temperature last year constituted +1.2°C (higher than in November or March). It was only the second time when the average December 2006 temperature stepped over the 0°C threshold. The first event was registered back in 1960. The average temperature then made up 0.1°C.
Precipitation is ongoing almost during the whole month, with few clear days, usually not more than 10. Winter thunderstorms are rare. Moscow precipitation total for December 2006 constituted 32 mm or 52% of the norm
(61.5 mm).
