This conducted by Global Forest Watch project was an international attempt to show the state and potential threats of wildlife conservation. The project involved experts from the five countries, which include forests in the boreal zone: Russia, Finland, Sweden, Canada and the United States.

The project was launched during the World Summit on Sustainable Development (August 30, 2002, Johannesburg, South Africa) to present preliminary results of high-resolution satellite imagery processing. The satellite images became the basis for monitoring of changes in the old-growth boreal forests of the world.
