- to help reduce the negative footprint of the oil and gas industry on the environment and people
- to develop a comprehensive, objective and science-based protocol for assessing environmental and social consequences of oil and gas extraction using publicly available information
- to assess the footprint of oil and gas extraction on terrestrial landscapes in Russia.
Three years (2005-2008)
The project is undertaken by the World Resources Institute in partnership with Russian and international environmental NGOs:
- Transparent World
- International Socio-Ecological Union
- Greenpeace-Russia
- WWF -Russia
Consultations are being held with members of the project's advisory group, which comprises a diversity of stakeholders, such as scientific institutions, NGOs, environmental consulting companies, oil/gas companies and local residents, including native peoples living in the areas directly affected by oil and gas extraction.
The project is supported by TNK-BP, the second largest oil company in Russia. This company also provides access to its facilities and ground support for WRI and its partners when needed. TNK-BP has the opportunity to review and comment on the project findings and it is also free to disagree with them. Some of the project participants take part in the project at their own expense.
